Trail Series

‘Sheep Farmer’

70x70cm

When out sketching in the open landscape today I met a sheep farmer who was walking up the hill towards where I was stood doing some sketches. He stopped to ask what I was painting and I told him I was just doing some abstracted sketches of what I’m seeing. He wondered if there was a market for that and the conversation went on to his days in school and how he hated it.. I responded with the same feeling and said how I loved the art class though. He was out walking up the hills looking for his sheep and asked if I’d seen any on my trail. That’s was it really..Its the small things..

This is my new painting ‘The Sheep Farmer’

and today’s experience prompted me to title my new series of paintings

Today

Things that caught my eye while out hill walking in some of my favourite places yesterday and today. How light changes.. How thoughts move..

Palette

This new painting I’ve just begun today has set out with undertones of warm earth colours. Burnt sienna and raw umber mixed across the canvas with cadmium reds and yellows. The light is mixed with lemon yellow and naples yellow and white..

This is only the first layer, the next one will change everything.

Watch it unfold..

Art Swop

My first art swop with fellow artist Michael Gemmell.. and Limerick School of Art and Design graduate.. I am truly honored to swop with such a talented artist who was tutored by John Shinnors and both of whom I’ve admired since discovering their work during my early years as an artist. I am completely inspired with this abstraction titled ‘The Burren in Autumn’ Oil on Canvas, 40x50cm

Swooped with my ‘Unfolding Autumn’ Oil and mixed media on canvas, 30x30cm

Now I am going to paint something new just to mark the moment.. More artists should be doing this.. it’s a phenomenal experience!..

Thank you Michael!

Pushing Abstraction

My current new series is all about pushing abstraction more than I have ever done before. Responding to my surrounding landscape and being so passionate about nature, forests and the open landscape. The colours are influenced by the bright vibrant summer light that is being experienced here in Ireland lately.

This is only a short rough video idea on the current direction I am taking and I am very excited about it indeed!

‘Entering The Dream’ New Solo Exhibition

DERVAL_FREEMAN_WEB1 Edit crop.jpg

An exhibition of recent paintings by Derval Freeman go on exhibit at Ranelagh Arts, Dublin 6, Thursday May 24th to June 4th 2018. With special guest speaker Michael Gemmell.

‘I hope to bring a piece of the forest and my surrounding rural landscape into the city for a little space in time.. I have a passion for exploring forests and being surrounded by the sight, smells and sounds. It takes me back to my childhood when I was just a little thing full of wonder and innocence. How the world has changed and everything around us.. seeing life and how the cycle of old and new continues from one into the next.. The ‘broken trees’ that stand out in the open spaces of the landscape recall these such thoughts..’

This exhibition will be an experience not to be missed. See you there!
