Detail of a ‘Aligning the Planets’ painting that I am revisiting at the moment.. For the past year I thought this painting was finished, but I’m feeling a new energy with it now. Some detail sections below.
Full size 100cm x 100cm, oil and cold wax on linen
Works in progress and probably a full moon eve moment of madness!
These began as gestural quick marks that all came about in one session within 4 hours. It was an expressive beginning to something I wanted to explore using yellow and orange, colours I love using together. The mediums used were both oil paints and oil sticks.
The next stage will be to refine parts of the works that appeal to me and to challenge the line, colour and marks further into a unity that is less arbitrary.
I enjoy how colours talk to each other and the challenge of making them work within one shared space. Line and texture fall into that same venture at some point and pose similar challenges. I never really know where a painting is going until almost the end. I can’t usually tell when, until I come away from the work and come back. So many new things are discovered, like how some detail needs to go in order for another to live, in the work.
