It is very hard to sit down and write ‘what my art is about’. I never really get it right! that’s true for years!.. So every now and again I try to re-write my artist statement with the hope I’m understood that bit better.. Lots of things come to mind when I paint and forContinue reading “The Artist Statement..a fear”
Standing back after an intense session of painting and trying to work out where it’s going I can sometimes see parts of the chaos in my mind. Usually on a day where I finally tackle my fears, the what, why, when, how, but, all shower down in a deafening noise. Then I stop and IContinue reading “Sometimes or Always?”
Looking out from Crone woods over Powerscourt and Djouce woods.
This came about on the top of Scarr mountain a few days ago. Looking out over the valley and onto the distant hills and forests. I followed the line of trails with my eye like a virtual map in front of me. Trying to work out my surroundings and where I was in relation toContinue reading “A Hike on Scarr Mountain”
I am thrilled to have my work photographed and now posted to my website here in Work 7. This work came about so fast and is continuing into the next pieces with a small change in direction. I am looking at opening the space more in the work as per my post last week. IContinue reading “Work 7”
New from the studio, oil and beeswax on stretched paper. The surface of the paper is primed with PVA and layers of gesso. I began with the drawing in charcoal and pencil with thin layers of paint ade transparent to reveal the under drawing detail. I also used oils mixed with cold wax to pushContinue reading “Oil on Paper”
I am working on this new painting at the moment and here is a small part of the detail in close up. In its early stages it had been leaning toward a title that came to mind – The Rings Of Saturn.. and more from a sound and movement perspective. For a part of theContinue reading “The Rings Of Saturn”

I am currently working on this painting and this was an early stage where it was a few months ago. I felt at the time that it could be finished at that early stage and I didn’t want to do much more with it. I put it aside for a few weeks, which is whatContinue reading “Painting Process”
This is an essay I wrote while doing an evening course at the University of Limerick 2007 studying the history of art and design. It was 10 years after graduating Limerick School of Art and Design and at that time I was only interested in painting and learning all its fundamentals. Over the years afterContinue reading “Paul Gauguin : : An Essay”
Painting in oils and coldwax. Mixed with drawing and mark making in charcoal and pencil. Full moon was on my mind at the time of making this painting and I was very much affected by a recent full moon at the time of when this came work about.
A small look at my current painting still in the making. I have two in progress at present and they seem to be playing off each other. With this painting that I am sharing here, thoughts and ideas leaning toward the full moon are starting to form. The way gravity affects the mind around thisContinue reading “Full Moon – In progress”

Having my son Aaron home from Berlin the past week, I was excited to show him my new work in my studio. He made some interesting observations and one that worked for this particular painting titled Killing Pink. So I revisited it once more with some extra blue and now I think it feels moreContinue reading “Killing Pink”
Trying to fix a painting.. inspired by thoughts and visual awareness from my hike today..well yesterday now.. terrains, tree felling, January sunset, tree stumps, wild winds over Lough Tay and spying on sparrow hawk trying to fly against the winds.. .
This is my first painting of 2019 which is almost finished. For some reason the thoughts of the planets aligning came to mind somewhere during the process. It could be to do with a philosophical conversation I had with my father when I was back home for Christmas. We were talking about the idea ofContinue reading “First painting of 2019”
